Permaculture – Living on the Land

Last fall, Heron’s Eye toured the permaculture site Whole Systems Design in Vermont’s Mad River Valley with students in the Sustainable Business & Communities M.A. program at Goddard College. Tour guide Ben Falk shared his knowledge of the land, and described the intensive process of restoring the topsoil layer by creating swales, which allow water to accumulate & penetrate the soil.

His sheep graze on the resulting vegetation & add nutrients to the earth. Says Ben: “Humans can accelerate ecosystem development, do good on the land and live with localized resources.”
