Smart Phone Photo Editing

Smart phone photo editing is the topic that Coal Cracker youth-led news reporters will explore on January 30th. The free training session will be led by Pulitzer Prize-winner Garry Pierre-Pierre, a multi-media and entrepreneurial journalist.

Coal Cracker reporter Ashley Stetson (at center in the above photo) will act as a youth trainer for the session, lending her smart phone photo editing expertise to the conversation. Ashley is a seventh grade student at Mahanoy Area Middle School. She has been a staff member at Coal Cracker since 2014.

About Smart Phone Photo Editing

“Smart Photos with Smart Phones” will be held on Saturday, January 30, from noon – 2pm, at the Teen Canteen in Mahanoy City, PA. The workshop is open to young people grades 5 through 12.

There is no cost to attend. No prior journalism experience is necessary. To RSVP email Coal Cracker.

The smart phone photo editing workshop will help participants to take better photos on mobile devices. Topics covered will include: the history of the technology in today’s world of photojournalism and media, composition, exposure, how to capture decisive moments, as well as conceptualizing and developing an approach.

There will be time for participants to go on assignment. The session will conclude with presentation and critique of the resulting images. Participants should bring a smartphone or tablet.

Pierre-Pierre is the Executive Director of the non-profit Community Reporting Alliance—which provides some funding to Coal Cracker. He is also founder of the City University Graduate School of Journalism‘s Center for Community and Ethnic Media. He is a co-host of the show Independent Sources on CUNY TV.

Garry Pierre-Pierre

Pierre-Pierre is the founder of The Haitian Times, an award-winning English language newspaper based in Brooklyn that is considered one of the most important news sources for the Haitian Diaspora.

Pierre-Pierre spent six years as a staff reporter at The New York Times where he covered the New York metropolitan area with special assignments in Africa and the Caribbean. He was a member of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for spot news for The New York Times’ coverage of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
