Wild Beauty Exhibit

The Looking Glass Art Gallery in the historic Hawley Silk Mill will present Wild Beauty: The Artful Nature of Shenandoah National Park, featuring the work of photographer and Heron’s Eye Co-Founder Sandy Long. The exhibit will run June 13 through 27, with an opening reception on Friday, June 12, from 5 to 8 pm. The reception is free and open to the public.

Sandy was named the first ever Artist-In-Residence at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia in September 2014. During her ensuing 12-day residency, she engaged in a daily photographic interface to capture the spirit of the iconic 200,000-acre park, from its grand landscapes and dreamy vistas, to its diverse wildlife and most delicate notitia—those essential details at the heart of place-based relationships.

Her residency celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act and the importance of preserving wild lands. Wild Beauty is a selection of photos, curated by Sandy, from her time in the spectacular Shenandoah National Park.

“Wilderness restores something deep within us that is easily depleted in today’s fast-paced world—and necessary to our survival. Deepening relationships to the places we love can impel us to work on their behalf,” says Sandy.

A portion of all Wild Beauty sales will be gifted to the Shenandoah National Park Trust, the official philanthropic foundation supporting Shenandoah National Park and its artist-in-residence program.

Beyond her work in Shenandoah, Sandy’s photography has always been influenced by her interaction with the natural world. Her love for her home in the Upper Delaware River region is expressed in the images on her website.

The Looking Glass Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Hawley Silk Mill, at 8 Silk Mill Drive. For more information, email Gallery Owner Juan Espino or call 570-226-0782.
